Delayed delivery of Symantec, GeoTrust and Thawte SSL certificates
13 December 2017
Since December 2017 SSL certificates from Symantec, GeoTrust and Thawte are being issued by DigiCert. Due to the deadlines set by browsers, millions of certificates worldwide have to be validated and issued again. As a result, the delivery time of Symantec, GeoTrust and Thawte certificates is currently longer than usual.
All Symantec, GeoTrust and Thawte certificates issued before the 1st of December 2017 require a reissue sooner or later to remain trusted by the browsers. The certificates to which this applies are clearly indicated in the Control Panel. Depending on the issue date, these certificates require a reissue by 15 March or 13 September 2018.
Advice for reissuance
|Certificates issued before June 1, 2016||Reissue before March 15, 2018||Reissue as soon as possible|
|Certificates issued after June 1, 2016||Reiussue before September 13, 2018||Wait with reissue|
Due to the current workload at DigiCert we advise to wait with reissuing certificates that need be exchanged before September 13, 2018. This has no impact on regular users until these deadlines - only some development environments of browsers will give warnings before these dates.
Switch to another brand
As an alternative you could switch to a comparable Comodo or GlobalSign certificate. Comodo certificates, for example, have a short delivery time of 15 minutes on average for a domain or organization validated certificate, and a working day on average for an EV certificate. To use this possibility please contact our sales department. They can discuss the most suited options with you.
Request a new certificate
The delayed delivery time also applies to new applications for Symantec, GeoTrust and Thawte certificates. If you need a certificate quickly, it is advisable to request a certificate from GlobalSign or Comodo. Do you prefer a Symantec, GeoTrust or Thawte certificate? Then it's advisable to take into account a longer delivery time.
